Missouri State Route 86: Carr Lane to Eagle Rock

Journey with us for 9 scenic miles through Missouri’s southwestern edge as we explore State Route 86 from Carr Lane to Eagle Rock. This stretch hugs the Arkansas border so closely that in several spots, you’re just a few yards from crossing into another state. It’s a short but captivating ride through the rolling hills of Barry County, offering glimpses of rural life, recreational getaways, and Ozark charm.

We begin our westward drive at the intersection of Missouri Route 39 in Carr Lane, a small crossroads community surrounded by tree-covered hills and open farmland. Route 86 curves gently as we gain elevation and begin tracking westward—never far from the Arkansas state line. This section of road is nestled in the rugged terrain of the Ozarks, where winding pavement and forested valleys offer a visual feast, especially in the spring and fall. Not far from here, to the south, lies the northern edge of the Mark Twain National Forest, though it doesn’t directly border the highway on this stretch.

A few miles in, we reach the Kings River crossing—a serene spot where the highway briefly dips into a valley to span the river. This bridge marks a transition point into the unincorporated community of Golden, Missouri. Golden may be small, but it’s a hub for recreation in the area, thanks to its proximity to Table Rock Lake. The lake’s clear waters and scenic bluffs make it a prime weekend escape for both locals and travelers from northwest Arkansas and southern Missouri.

Continuing west on MO-86, the road climbs again through wooded terrain, winding past a mix of homes, churches, and countryside. Though development is sparse, the drive offers a quiet kind of beauty that defines much of Missouri’s Ozark region. Look out for wild turkeys, deer, and the occasional bald eagle, especially near the lake and river valleys.

After about four miles, we approach the intersection with Missouri Route P. This is where we turn left and head south toward Arkansas, marking the end of our journey on Route 86. Route P is a short connector that takes travelers down to the Arkansas border, where it becomes AR Highway 23—the famed Pig Trail Scenic Byway. But that’s a drive for another day.

This short segment of Missouri State Route 86 is more than just a connector between rural communities. It’s a slice of Ozarks backroad driving at its finest—peaceful, curvy, and full of hidden gems. Whether you’re on your way to Table Rock Lake, continuing south into Arkansas, or just exploring Missouri’s lesser-traveled highways, this drive offers a quiet charm that rewards those who venture off the main routes.
