Arkansas Highway 43: Compton to Ponca

Tucked deep in the Ozark Mountains, the short 4-mile drive along Arkansas Highway 43 from Compton to Ponca might not cover much ground—but it packs in a hefty dose of natural beauty and outdoor appeal. Starting just southwest of Compton, we turn onto Highway 43 from AR-103 and immediately begin descending through some of the most scenic terrain in northern Arkansas. This route skirts the western edge of the Buffalo National River area, making it a popular entry point for adventurers looking to explore the upper Buffalo’s many trails, waterfalls, and wildlife habitats.

As we travel south, the two-lane highway threads its way along a narrow ridge before dipping into the valleys that mark the edge of the Boxley Valley Historic District. This stretch of Highway 43 offers glimpses of both forested ridgelines and open pastureland, with frequent views of the steep, craggy hills that define the upper Buffalo River country. In autumn, this drive is especially striking, with the Ozarks blazing in shades of orange, crimson, and gold. It’s a favorite route for photographers and leaf-peepers alike, and for good reason—there aren’t many better backdrops in the state.

Approaching Ponca, things start to feel a bit more remote and wild. Elk sightings are common in this area, especially in the fields surrounding the Ponca Elk Education Center. If you’re driving in the early morning or late afternoon, keep your eyes open—you may spot a whole herd. The highway winds past a couple of trailheads and campgrounds, making it a key access point for hikes like the Lost Valley Trail and the Buffalo River Trail. The drive ends at the junction with Arkansas Highway 74 in Ponca, a small community known as a hub for river outfitters, cabin rentals, and hikers heading into the heart of the Ozark wilderness.
