Arkansas Highway 92: Bee Branch to Higden

Leaving the rolling hills of Bee Branch behind, we embark on a 13-mile journey east along Arkansas Highway 92, a scenic and tranquil stretch of state highway that threads through the rural heart of north-central Arkansas. This segment begins at the junction with U.S. Route 65 in Bee Branch, a small but active community nestled near the edge of the Ozark foothills. From here, Highway 92 winds its way into the wooded landscapes and farm country that typify Van Buren County.

Heading eastward, the route maintains a peaceful, rural character with gentle curves and elevation changes that make it an enjoyable drive, especially for those seeking a break from busier highways. A few miles in, we meet Arkansas Highway 356, which veers southeast toward Quitman. Here, Highway 92 shifts direction slightly, turning northeast as it makes its way toward Sulphur Springs, a small community known for its natural springs and pastoral charm. This part of the route offers glimpses of open fields bordered by pine and hardwood forests, with occasional clearings revealing old barns and distant ridgelines.

Continuing northeast, the route grows increasingly scenic as we near the Greers Ferry Lake region. Before reaching Higden, Highway 92 intersects with Arkansas Highway 337, a spur route that provides access to the Sugar Loaf Use Area—a popular recreational site featuring boat ramps, campsites, and hiking opportunities near the lake’s edge. If you’re in no rush, a detour along AR-337 is highly recommended for nature lovers and lakegoers.

Shortly after the AR-337 junction, Highway 92 curves eastward again to complete its run just southwest of Higden, where it meets Arkansas Highway 16. This quiet community sits near the shores of Greers Ferry Lake and serves as a gateway to both the water and the surrounding outdoor recreation areas. Although short in length, this segment of Highway 92 serves as an important connector through a scenic and laid-back portion of the state, ideal for leisurely drives or as part of a longer exploration of the Ozarks and the Greers Ferry region.
