Arkansas Highway 16: Higden to Pearson

Traveling through the scenic heart of north-central Arkansas, this 12-mile segment of Arkansas Highway 16 offers a winding and wooded drive between the lakeside town of Higden and the rural community of Pearson. Starting just southwest of Higden at the junction with Arkansas Highway 92, this route hugs the northern edge of Greers Ferry Lake, blending water views, forested ridges, and quiet Ozark charm into a relaxing eastbound journey.

As we leave the intersection with AR-92, Highway 16 initially dips to the southwest before gradually curving southward. Almost immediately, the road begins to mirror the natural contours of Greers Ferry Lake—a massive reservoir created by the damming of the Little Red River. Along this stretch, motorists are treated to occasional glimpses of the lake peeking through dense pine and hardwood trees. The drive feels remote and serene, with only the occasional cabin, boat launch, or lakeside subdivision hinting at the communities tucked into the hillsides. This part of the route is ideal for travelers looking to soak in Arkansas’s outdoor beauty without veering far from civilization.

Continuing along the shoreline, the road shifts from south to southeast, climbing and dipping gently as it navigates the rugged terrain. The intersection with Arkansas Highway 225 marks a brief but notable junction—AR-225 heads south towards Quitman. Past this point, AR-16 begins a slow descent toward Pearson, winding past small farms, forest tracts, and gravel driveways that speak to the quiet, rural character of Cleburne County.

Arriving in Pearson, the road levels out and transitions into a more open landscape. While Pearson itself is a modest community, it serves as a connector point to the larger town of Heber Springs just a few miles northeast via AR-25. Our segment ends at the intersection with AR-25, a more heavily traveled highway that links this area to Greers Ferry Lake’s eastern shore and beyond.

Though not long, this stretch of Arkansas Highway 16 offers a peaceful ride filled with natural scenery, low traffic, and gentle curves that make it a favorite for weekend drivers, local commuters, and anyone seeking a slower pace through the woods. Whether you’re en route to a lakeside cabin, taking the scenic way into Heber Springs, or simply exploring the Ozark backroads, the Higden to Pearson segment of AR-16 is a worthwhile detour.
